Bah! What a let down!

Well, the in-house judges have chosen the 20 finalists in the Hobbycraft competition that I put 'Branches' in for, but I didn't make it. Pah! The first time I ever thought I might stand some sort of chance, and didn't even get short-listed! So, no need to watch for a link to the voting here, 'cos I needn't post one.=( To be honest, I would have struggled to find £125 or £250 worth of stuff to buy from them as the prize money was in their store's gift vouchers (I really have almost everything I want, except some special paper), but it would have been nice to try..... I couldn't describe myself as bitterly disappointed and, in a way it's a relief to not have the stress of getting the most public votes etc, but it would have been nice to win something. Sigh!

I tried cast-on stitch the other day and can't call that a rip-roaring success either! I'm glad I did it on a 'doodle pad' first and not straight on the project I was planning to use it on. I also made the mistake of doing it immediately after viola practice which meant that I was needing my left hand first finger to make contact with the sharp needle point when I'd just been putting it under pressure by it having to hold viola strings down - you can get quite sore when, like me, you don't practice enough!! So, not sure about that one for the time being. I wanted cast-on stitch roses for a silver wedding card, but I need to do more dummy runs and find some way of preserving my finger tip.... Any suggestions welcomed!

I thought about entering something, then nothing came to my mind, and then as I am in a sort of fragile state of mind where I wouldn't be able to handle rejection, I just didn't enter anything.
Looking at the "top 20", it looks like stitching and textile art in general is under represented... I guess they prefer other crafts, at least by the look of the space stitching occupies my local Hobbycraft...

Sorry, Elisabeth, can't see the connection between Korean and Vietnamese and the book I suggested (big grin).

Are you planning a trip to Korea and/or Vietnam? How difficult of a language is that to learn by the way?

I love Branches too! Now dont let that put you off participating in future competitions! Sorry dont speak Korean nor Vietnamese. You speak Cantonese and Mandarin? Bahasa Malaysia anyone?

Thanks for the reply. Please could you delete the first application from ring surf as it will not let me join again at the moment, could not get the code first time as i had baby sick to sort out, also good chance that extra letters where added to my e-mail as my son loves to 'help', which may be the reason i cant log in. Thanks

Sorry to hear about the competition.

I am curious how is it going with the Korean or Vietnamese, have you started learning?

Have a nice weekend.

Hi, Elisabeth - I'm a lurker on your blog! Sorry to hear about the competition...

For cast on stitch, after you roll your finger towards you to loop the thread on it, if you rest the needle on your fingernail (even the top of it, though I find it easier to rest it on the underside of the tip) before sliding the thread on, it helps. Better than putting the needle up to your finger and getting a bit too close for comfort.

Hope that helps. Good luck!
